Handball goals for a good cause: ORLEN Deutschland supports children's cancer ward

18-03-2025

8,600 euros for 86 goals scored. With this donation, ORLEN Deutschland is supporting the paediatric cancer ward at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH). The goals for which ORLEN is donating 100 euros each were scored by THW Kiel captain Patrick Wiencek in the 2023/2024 Bundesliga season. This successful player sponsorship has been in place for more than ten years and has now raised over 115,000 euros for the hospital.

Giving children and young people with a cancer diagnosis a perspective and supporting them on their way back into everyday life has been the aim of this initiative since the beginning. In the past, for example, a room for fitness and equipment training has been set up in the paediatric oncology department and the sports and exercise programme has been expanded.

‘Without the many years of reliable support from the player sponsorship of ORLEN Deutschland with Patrick Wiencek, we would not have been able to develop and expand our sports and exercise programme as an enormously important pillar of treatment for our young patients to the extent that it is now an integral part of the care of children and adolescents. We are very grateful for this,’ says Prof Dr Gunnar Cario, Director of the Clinic for Paediatric Oncology and Rheumatology at the UKSH.

The donation cheque was handed over to the UKSH in person last Thursday by ORLEN Deutschland COO Dennis Kulbach and patron player Patrick Wiencek.

‘For me personally, this is a very impressive and moving initiative. The support for the hospital and the children shows how sport and social commitment can be combined. Having Patrick Wiencek as captain of THW Kiel is certainly a great advantage in driving this important work forward and motivating many people to get involved,’ says Dennis Kulbach, Managing Director of ORLEN Deutschland GmbH.

The player sponsorship will also be continued for the current season. In addition to the goals scored by captain Wiencek, ORLEN donates 300 euros for every seven-metre penalty saved by THW goalkeeper Andreas Wolff. After 20 league games, 32 goals and 15 saved seven-metre penalties have been scored.

ORLEN Deutschland and THW Kiel have been partners for over 14 years. The company has been the main and jersey sponsor of the German handball record champions since 2016, and this sponsorship was only extended in February 2025 for a further five years until 2030.
